It’s amazing what they do now a days. In for surgery for 8 out by 10. 20/20 vision!! no more glasses!!
Believe it or not, I have people asking what I have for fall color, fall vegetables!! Where are these people from??!! Sunday is supposed to break a record of 99 degrees! Doesn’t really feel like fall yet!!
We actually have started to put some plant material down for fall. Many of these plants can cross over with this heat to the real fall weather that is coming. Marigolds, Telstar dianthus, ornamental cabbage and kale.
Speaking of ornamental cabbage and kale. This is a great color plant for fall/winter. I think it is under used. It used to be very popular back in the 80’s. This is THE one crop you want to get into the ground as early as possible. It is a “short” day plant, same as poinsettias, the earlier you plant, the larger the plant will be before it starts to “head” up or develop the rich color in the center of the plant. I often see kale and cabbage for sale in 4″ pots as late as December and at that stage, what you see is what you get. It’s not going to get much bigger that what you purchased. If you plant early, I would put them on at least 18″ to 24″ centers!! I saw one planting years ago and the plants were close to 3′ across !!!
Telstar dianthus is another under used plant. A true perennial, It goes 12 months a year with the down time around July and August and picks up again in September.
So, Till next time…..
